AFL Bear : Let me introduce AFA Genes...
AFL Bear : Our cordial chat host... who will make the
formal introductions! ga, Gene!
AFA GeneS : Thank you Mr. Bear.....
AFA GeneS : Let me also introduce our friendly neighborhood
AFC Pieter. And also an introduction for a guest
visitor from the Mac Utilities Forum, AFC
PeterS. Since we still have a light crowd here
tonight, I'm going to hold off on protocol for a
bit and see how it works. But please try not to
interrupt the flow of the conversation and we'll
try to take on... all questioners in turn. ga
Alexis Kai : Which is wiser: Buy high end Mac now and hold
out for as long as possible before buying PPC,
or stay with low-end (68020) Mac and get PPCs
fairly soon?
AFA GeneS : The rumor mill says PowerPC Macs will be... here
by March 14. Since that date, if it happens...
is so close at hand, maybe it just pays for you
to wait a while longer and see what the new
product introduction brings. At least if you
don't see what you want, the existing line of
high-power Quadras will be cheaper. Two
comments, I see. First Don Brown, ga.
Don Brown : OK There was apparently a new LC computer
announced today, that is very agressively priced
and looks pretty powerful. Definitely something
to consider. GA
Dan Bryant : I wouldn't rush out and buy the first PPC's. Any
new platform is bound to have problems... In
either hardware or software. ga
AFA GeneS : Actually, Don, I think we're talking of two LC
models, one of which has an LC 040.
Don Brown : Alexis, I don't remember the details, they have
a built-in color monitor. One has an LC040 that
they said would run as fast as a Quadra 800, at
under two grand.
AFA GeneS : That is primarily earmarked for the educational
market of course.
Morris S1 : I've been buying computers for the last 15 yrs
and they are just like cameras, the day you get
it is the day its obsolete
Alexis Kai : Dan, I wasnt thinking of buying 601, but holding
out for 604 or 620. Don, that sounds incredibly
nice to me. Don Brown : Has a special slot for
EITHER an internal modem or an ethernet port, in
addition to the normal PDS
Alexis Kai : Wheres the catch?
Don Brown : slot (but no Nubus, it's an LC after all)
AFA GeneS : The two models are the LC-575 and the LC-550.
Don Brown : Gene, the 575 is the souped-up model?
Alexis Kai : 550? I thought that was already out. Maybe I╒m
thinking Performa.
AFA GeneS : That's what the release in front of me says.
Alexis Kai : Where can I get more info?
AFA GeneS : Type the keyword Newsbytes, and look under the
Apple news category for this stuff.
Morris S1 : The next latest and greatest machine is always
just 2 months away. Just buy what you need now &
use IT
Alexis Kai : No, thats not what Im looking for...
Don Brown : They said availability is immediate, so your
friendly dealer should have info now if not
actual models.
Alexis Kai : It says they have monitors already installed,
but Id like to keep my own monitor.
AFA GeneS : By the way, Apple has announced that a future
PPC upgrade would include the LC-520, 550, 575,
LC-475, Quadra 605 and Performa 475/76 models.
AFC Pieter : Rumor has it that Apple has stopped production
temorarily of the 610, 650 and 800 to make the
new PPCs in quantity for intro
AngeloL936 : Ok, first, I never liked built-in monitors (like
the Performa 500 series, but Apple changed it
for mar marketing reasons i heard
Morris S1 : Is System 7.1 important to get?
AFC Pieter : It all depends on what you want. I need it for
my mac, but I also like the fonts folder
AngeloL936 : My question is, using the performa System 7.1p3,
how much different is it than 7.1?
AFA GeneS : The main difference is those little add-ons,
like the Launcher....and Peforma Control
Panels... which Apple thinks will make Performas
easier to use for the consumer electronics
buyer. 7.1p3 is essentially the same as 7.1
otherwise.
AngeloL936 : Follow up, are the two systems compatible? How
can you tell if software is 32-bit clean?
AFA GeneS : They should run the same software in much the
same way. If software crashes in 32-bit mode,
it's not compatible. :)
Alexis Kai : MacCheck, I believe, will tell you if any
applications are 32-bit clean.
AFC PeterS : Utilities that tell you if software is 32-bit
clean just check the 32- bit comptible flag and
plenty of software that's compatible has the
flag set for incompatible. Likewise if it's set
for compatible, that doesn't prove that it is.
GA
AFA GeneS : (Not every software developer checks that flag,
Peter!)
ChuckS26 : There is a new utlility (1/27/94) called Check
32!! that also checks for 32 bit cleanliness
Alexis Kai : I dont know about that technical stuff.
Masashi : Some awfully old software like CricketGraph 1.x
is perfectly compatible with 32-bit, although it
may be officially not, of course (doesn't have
the flag). So you have to testdrive them anyway.
Dan Bryant : Fonts. Is it necessary (or desireable) to go
with JUST Truetype or Postscript, or can you mix
& match in a font folder, a document, etc. And
why does every service bureau want Adobe
postscript? I have slides made, and my fonts get
icky bit-mapped.
AFA GeneS : Dan: Some imagesetters will not work well or at
all with TrueType, which is why they won't
PostScript. And service bureaus owners aren't
going to buy expensive upgrades for their RIPs
to support thee fonts. My suggestion: If you
are going to output your work at a service
bureau, use PostScript fonts...
exclusively, unless the service bureau tells you
otherwise.... In general, so long as you don't
have both a TrueType and PostScript font of the
same style.... it should not present a problem.
(Say a TrueType Helvetica and a PostScript Avant
Garden, for example) ga
Dan Bryant : Then why does Apple and Microsoft push Truetype
so much? (then ga)
AFA GeneS : Cause they developed it and don't have to pay
Adobe for their fonts.
Dan Bryant : Hm. Okay, thanks (ga)
Cocounsel : Thanks, I just got Datalinkplus 7.5 today and I
already had converters from Access PC 3.0 and
Wordperfect 3.0. Can I dump these now? I need
the system space
Masashi : Theoretically you can. But acc. my experience,
MacLink Plus translators are sometimes buggy...
So, you do it carefully after full backup.
AFA GeneS : (Their ones for Word, for example).
AFC Pieter : No kidding, It took me a couple hours to fix a
document their stuff mangled. On my Mac, it
deleted all refs to X:\ directories in a WFW 2
doc
ChuckS26 : just upgraded to 7.5 Mac Link and find everytime
I place something into PM it asks if I want to
use MacLink...arghh!!! nop other problems
though. I like MacLink
IleneH : RE: the translators, throw out the oldest ones
not the newest ones... also what are the bugs
you get??
Masashi : For example, any WriteNow docs doen't translate
correctly, etc. I can cite maybe 10 examples,
Ilene.
IleneH : does it screw up formatting when Word->WP for
WInd?
Masashi : Is PPC upgrade for Q605 (and its clones)
PowerPC603-based as thought earlier or is it
601?...! Can I ask one more Q?
AFA GeneS : Apple didn't say in their announcement but I
expect it would be a 603 upgrade later on in the
year.
AFA GeneS : I think they wanted to announce it to reassure
potential buyers with the new products... coming
out.
Masashi : If I can, What's the latest official word from
Apple about System 7.5 and PowerOpen?
AFA GeneS : Well, it's still under development, Masashi.
MacLeak now says it'll come in the summer.
AFL Bear : About 7.5, Stew?
AFC Pieter : System 7.5 is suposed to be out in June, give or
take a month
StewMiller : System 7.5 is currently beta testing with
developers.
Masashi : So, no official word from Apple?
AFA GeneS : Very, very early Beta.
StewMiller : They say it is a realy improvement but min 5
megs of ram though.
AFC Pieter : Course, it went into Beta this week.
AFA GeneS : Apple has made no official announcement yet.
AFL Bear : Yeah, it seems to be very ram-hungry... :)
Masashi : How about PowerOpen?
AFC Pieter : Quickdraw GX is supposed to be included
AFA GeneS : That makes it more RAM hungry...
AFC Pieter : Power Open 1.1 will ship with System 7.5 pro and
maybe 7.5
Masashi : Is it still Apple+IBM?
Misha4 : Quickdraw GX WAS supposed to be available with
7.1
AFA GeneS : GX is a one meg hog unto itself. We will also
not officially comment on your minimum... system
size (without inits)... on the first PowerPC
Macs.
Masashi : Kidding, Pieter! I thought powerOpen was a
flavor of Unix!
AFA GeneS : That is if you like eating Unix!
AFC Pieter : There will be a PowerOpen spec by IBM that
allows you to run OS/2 AIX or Taligent and maybe
Mac OS
ElaineC101 : I have an LC and need some advice on buying a
new machine...I'm concerned about upgradeability
and PPC and $$$. Did someone say earlier the
Quadra 605 would take PPC? Thanks!
AFA GeneS : Apple has said there would be an upgrade... they
have not said when.
AFC Pieter : No the 605 will not be upgraded. at least by
Apple it won't
AFA GeneS : I tend to doubt that it will be in the first
batch....
Misha4 : Apple announced yesterday that the 605 will be
ugradable to PowerPC.
AFA GeneS : Pieter: Apple just made the statement that it
would be. Probably the 603 chip when it comes
out. Check NewsBytes, first or second Apple
item.
AFC Pieter : New info, sorry folks. My rep said no.
Alexis Kai : When should a fellow start to worry about
remaining hard disk space?
AFA GeneS : Alexis: When you are 90% filled, definitely.
Alexis Kai : Im 96% filled. Suggestions?
AFC Pieter : Yep, once you hit 85-90% start looking for a new
drive or compression sopftware
AFA GeneS : Yes, call your friendly hard drive supplier and
see what they are offering. There are lots of
nice things in the $300-600 dollar range now....
Alexis Kai : Whats a nice size for a family of 6?
AngeloL936 : Yes, Alexis should look into a new internal with
more capcity or an external (what you said)
AFA GeneS : Alexis: A nice size is the biggest you can
afford :) $600 would get you 500-700MB. You can
get a gigabyte for $800-1000.
StewMiller : SyQuest removable drives 237 MB are around $299
now w/ cartridges at $99!
AFA GeneS : Stew: That's 270MB, and the price is closer to
$500-600...for the drive, $99 for each cartridge.
Teknosys : Spin has the Toshiba 1GIG for $699 external.
Alexis Kai : Well, being as Im not the one in the house with
the checkbook, I need a fairly low price.
AFA GeneS : but it's not a replacement for a fixed drive.
AFL Bear : Stew, you mean the 3.5" SyQuests?
Alexis Kai : We have a 100 MB drive now.
AngeloL936 : Stew, what kind of drives (media) are you
talking abut in them Syquests
AFA GeneS : Alexis: Get a 340MB for mid-300s.
AFL Bear : 'Cuz the ads I saw were $299 for the 105s, and
about $500 for the 270s.
StewMiller : Oops $499 you are right, Page 197 of MacUser
current issue.
AFL Bear : I just looked again - it's $400 for the 105 and
$600 for the 270, no carts. I'll check out
macUser - I was looking at a catalog price.
Thanks, Stew!
AFA GeneS : But expect the price of the 270s to come down
within the next few months, as they always will!
StewMiller : No problem, love the syquests :)
Sheela : OK. Does anyone know if Apple will make PPC
upgrades for PPC machines? Like a 601 to a 603?
GA/ Thanks, Bear.
AFC Pieter : Sheela, there will always be something neater if
you wait, the question you need to ask is when
do you need it.
Sheela : Alexis is right... since I got bumped I didn't
know where were were
AFA GeneS : Possibly... if it would be done with a
daughterboard or chip swap. But a 603 is no
faster than a 601, just a lower power version.
Maybe to a 604.
Sheela : Ahh... I didn't know that, Gene. Thanks.
AngeloL936 : I want to ask about AOL's new user-friendly,
graphical interface for Internet? I hear it's in
the planning stages
AFL Bear : What about it? Is it coming? Yes.
AngeloL936 : When is it due? What's the bps? etc? How easy to
Use?
AFL Bear : In February?? I hope so! Have we seen it and is
it good? :) No comment, we're bound by non-
disclosure. :) But I would say if you want to
see the Internet in an GUI... Don't leave AOL
until you do see it.
AngeloL936 : How does it measure up with Apples new online
service, I hear they too plan an Internet easy
line
AFA GeneS : Angelo: Sorry, we're bound by NDA. We cannot
tell you anything till AOL releases... its plans
fully in public.
AFL Bear : I have not seen eWorld's Internet Interface, so
I can't say.
Masashi : I also heard that Apple is extending AppleSearch
technology for Internet info retrieval.
AFL Bear : I would like to say this... If you use the
keyword INTERNET, you'll see some
announcements... regarding Internet, WAIS &
Gopher, and News Groups...
Teknosys : Interface for eWorld looks exactly like the
pictures in MacWeek. Nothing gets past them. :)
AFL Bear : Read them, and believe them!
Sheela : Are there any Q&A sessions on PPC with Apple
planned for the March debut? GA/
AFA GeneS : Apple stuff is highly NDAed right now, but I
expect you'll see stuff beyond their press
releases in the next few weeks.
Sheela : Oh... OK. Thanks, Gene.
AFL Bear : I can say we have a special Apple guest on March
3rd....
AFA GeneS : Bear?
AFL Bear : He's from Apple and he knows PPSs. :)
Sheela : Ok.. great! Thanks, Bear.
AFA GeneS : Yep.... We must mention that.
AFL Bear : Uh... PPCs, that is. Do the words Product
Manager mean anything to you? ;)
Sheela : Allllrrriigghhtt! Good show~!
AFA GeneS : I cornered him at the Expo, when he was in a
good mood :)
Sheela : I am looking to get a new machine. I have a
Lisa, an LC, and a Newton. I intend to get a PPC
when they come out. I'm really looking forward
to it. Will they be Apple Platinum? Black? I
mean the case Anybody know?
AFL Bear : The ones I have seen were platinum, but that
doesn't mean a thing.
