  27.              out for as long as possible before buying PPC, 
  28.              or stay with low-end (68020) Mac and get PPCs 
  29.              fairly soon?

  31. AFA GeneS  : The rumor mill says PowerPC Macs will be... here 
  32.              by March 14. Since that date, if it happens... 
  33.              is so close at hand, maybe it just pays for you 
  34.              to wait a while longer and see what the new 
  35.              product introduction brings. At least if you 
  36.              don't see what you want, the existing line of 
  37.              high-power Quadras will be cheaper. Two 
  38.              comments, I see. First Don Brown, ga.

  40. Don Brown  : OK There was apparently a new LC computer 
  41.              announced today, that is very agressively priced 
  42.              and looks pretty powerful.  Definitely something

  46.              new platform is bound to have problems... In

  50.              models, one of which has an LC 040.

  53.              a built-in color monitor.  One has an LC040 that 
  54.              they said would run as fast as a Quadra 800, at 
  55.              under two grand.

  102.              PPC upgrade would include the LC-520, 550, 575,

  106.              temorarily of the 610, 650 and 800 to make the 
  107.              new PPCs in quantity for intro

  128.              like the Launcher....and Peforma Control 
  129.              Panels... which Apple thinks will make Performas
  130.              easier to use for the consumer electronics 
  131.              buyer. 7.1p3 is essentially the same as 7.1

  138.              can you tell if software is 32-bit clean?

  140. AFA GeneS  : They should run the same software in much the 
  141.              same way. If software crashes in 32-bit mode, 
  142.              it's not compatible. :)

  144. Alexis Kai : MacCheck, I believe, will tell you if any 
  145.              applications are 32-bit clean.

  147. AFC PeterS : Utilities that tell you if software is 32-bit 
  148.              clean just check the 32- bit comptible flag and 
  149.              plenty of software that's compatible has the 
  150.              flag set for incompatible. Likewise if it's set 
  151.              for compatible, that doesn't prove that it is.

  158.              32!! that also checks for 32 bit cleanliness

  162. Masashi    : Some awfully old software like CricketGraph 1.x 
  163.              is perfectly compatible with 32-bit, although it 
  164.              may be officially not, of course (doesn't have 
  165.              the flag). So you have to testdrive them anyway.

  170. Dan Bryant :  Fonts. Is it necessary (or desireable) to go 
  171.              with JUST Truetype or Postscript, or can you mix  
  172.              & match in a font folder, a document, etc. And 
  173.              why does every service bureau want Adobe 
  174.              postscript? I have slides made, and my fonts get 
  175.              icky bit-mapped.

  177. AFA GeneS  : Dan: Some imagesetters will not work well or at  
  178.              all with TrueType, which is why they won't 
  179.              PostScript. And service bureaus owners aren't 
  180.              going to buy expensive upgrades for their RIPs 
  181.              to support thee fonts.  My suggestion: If you 
  182.              are going to output your work at a service 
  183.              bureau, use PostScript fonts... 
  184.              exclusively,unless the service bureau tells you 
  185.              otherwise.... In general, so long as you don't 
  186.              have both a TrueType and PostScript font of the 
  187.              same style.... it should not present a problem. 
  188.              (Say a TrueType Helvetica and a PostScript Avant 
  189.              Garden, for example) ga

  195.              Adobe for their fonts.

  208.              MacLink Plus translators are sometimes buggy... 
  209.              So, you do it carefully after full backup.

  214.              document their stuff mangled. On my Mac, it 
  215.              deleted all refs to X:\ directories in a WFW 2

  219.              I place something into PM it asks if I want to 
  220.              use MacLink...arghh!!! nop other problems

  349.              nice things in the $300-600 dollar range now....

  357.              afford :) $600 would get you 500-700MB. You can 
  358.              get a gigabyte for $800-1000.

  360. StewMiller : SyQuest removable drives 237 MB are around $299 
  361.              now w/ cartridges at $99!

  364.              $500-600...for the drive, $99 for each cartridge.
